Next Manchester United manager verdict as 'perfect' candidate emerges
Manchester United's hierarchy must get their next appointment right if they want to restore faith in the new ownership, following a disastrous spell with Ruben Amorim at the helm
Another Manchester United manager has failed to hit the lofty expectations set by Sir Alex Ferguson's time with the club, with Ruben Amorim having been given his marching orders on Monday morning - and some fans in the Manchester Evening News comments section worry that the current frontrunner to succeed Amorim may not be cut out for the job.
Amorim was meant to herald a new age under the minority ownership and footballing leadership of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS. They kept the faith through a tremendously testing Premier League season where they finished 15th and fell to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final, but it was a power struggle that finally ended his reign.
The next pick is vital, and Crystal Palace's Oliver Glasner is the favourite to succeed Amorim. His team have outperformed expectations, winning the FA Cup and improving players like Marc Guehi and Jean-Philippe Mateta into valuable stars.
Enzo Maresca is available after his own failed power struggle at Chelsea, with a Club World Cup and UEFA Conference League trophy under his belt. Gareth Southgate's links remain, and Ipswich's Kieran McKenna and Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola have continued to impress.
Xavi Hernandez is also a free agent after leaving Barcelona in 2024, where he won the La Liga title during his first full season in charge.
There's much for fans to consider, but some have reservations about the obvious pick for the job. Reader Dgoett says: "Glasner is confrontational with his bosses at Palace. Didn't we just see this at Man U? Find a good coach, who gets along with his team and his bosses. Shouldn't be that hard."
Commenter Gazsco writes: "Just booted out a good manager because you didn't like his 343 system, would just about sum up United at the moment if they then appoint Glasner or another manager who plays the same system. Clueless."
Khayflux agrees: "If Manchester United appoints Glasner, then the top brass are confused and have got no idea of what they truly need.
"You sacked a manager who plays a 343 formation which they and a major section of the fans had complained about, and they still want to hire another manager with the same formation. Any fan who supports Glasner's appointment is as confused as the board."
Redpep says: "Does anyone really think Glasner is the answer. I definitely don’t think so. And so the manager merry go round starts AGAIN!"
DAVES disagrees: "Out of a very poor bunch of candidates Glasner is the only one with the correct credentials. Southgate? Do me a favour!"
Kay Richie is more emphatic: "Glasner is far better than Amorim, he has trophies and win percentage to show for it in the same league. He plays attacking football with same formation Amorim uses to defend, yet concede more goals always. If you don’t like Glasner just say it, but to compare him to Amorim is a big disrespect to him."
Adam80 writes: "Xavi maybe? De Zerbi? Maresca? All are attacking coaches. Just not Southgate."
1968red says: "Gareth Southgate? Give me a break. Also Maresca hasn't been pulling up the trees at Chelsea. Maybe the Bournemouth manager or Xavi from Barcelona, but not a 343 lover."
BayBoy says: "I would love to see United managed by Xavi. He would in my view set the Prem alight, with his attacking style, tactical brilliance and willingness to give young players their wings. I think he would be the perfect man for the job."
Sav7 writes: "My choices are - Xavi for the Spanish style and discipline, similar to Guardiola and Arteta. Conte as a natural winner, disciplined, 'win at all costs' and fiery. Or Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, attacking football the United way with a new refreshed squad."
