Xabi Alonso has left a Chelsea star's agent fearing that the player might struggle for regular first-team game time this season following Sunday's defeat at Arsenal Estevao's camp are worried that Xabi Alonso will continue to use him at right wing-back for Chelsea, it has been claimed. The 19-year-old, who joined the Blues in a £29million deal from Palmeiras last summer, made 38 appearances during his first season at Stamford Bridge, scoring eight goals and providing three assists. Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim managed to deceive his Newcastle counterpart through a pre-match ploy

 


Ahead of the Boxing Day clash against the Magpies, all sources projected a 3-4-2-1 formation when the lineups were announced, with Lisandro Martinez combining with Luke Shaw and Ayden Heaven in the back-three.


Although deploying three left-footed defenders raised some eyebrows, this was deemed an almost compulsory choice in the absence of Harry Maguire, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui, in addition to Leny Yoro enduring a steep slump.


However, fans and observers were stunned after witnessing Man Utd lining up in a 4-2-3-1 system at kickoff.


Ruben Amorim stunned Newcastle by changing Man United’s system

Patrick Dorgu, who scored the goal that separated the two sides, was deployed as an inverted right winger, joining Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount as Benjamin Sesko’s supporting crew, while Diogo Dalot slotted back to his original role at right-back.


Although Amorim decided to revert to his old system at the hour mark by replacing Casemiro with Yoro, the initial change was deemed remarkable, considering how the manager had once proclaimed that not even the pope could convince him to abandon his tried-and-trusted playing system.


Interestingly, Sun Journalist Samuel Luckhurst revealed that the Portuguese manager was adamant about fooling Eddie Howe during the pre-match warm-ups, with his players adopting the usual three-man backline.


Luckhurst noticed how Newcastle’s analysts in the press box were scrambling after the start of the match, realising they had fallen to the ‘ruse’.


Amorim had already hinted at Man Utd’s tactical change

While the system switch was certainly surprising, it didn’t necessarily come out of the blue. Instead, several reports had indicated a potential change in the coming days.


Moreover, Amorim confirmed the speculations in his pre-match press conference, admitting that Man Utd cannot play a ‘perfect’ 3-4-3 without spending big in the market, hinting that the current squad is more suitable for a four at the back.


After the encouraging first-half display against Newcastle, Amorim could be encouraged to confirm the 4-2-3-1 system for the upcoming contests. But while the surprise card can only be used once,  the 40-year-old arguably played it to perfection.
